Know the Sugar Artist
CHARINA STA. MARIA - SUNIO is The Sugar Artist.
Since the age of 8, Charina has been inclined into arts and crafts. She has joined art competitions but never in school for she was never confident of her works as a child. Her being artistically inclined was inspired by her parents --her mother with the creativity of her embroidery business and love for cooking while her father's engineering skills.
CHARINA is a Fine Arts - Visual Communications graduate from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. Charina began her Advertising carreer in 1991, as a Production Designer. Then moved to corporate world as Advertising & Promotions/PR Head before she created her own garments company. Charina remembers herself doing the "artpieworkshops" website about 10 years ago. The artworkshop was an art expression while running a 20-personnel garment factory which supplies local department stores in the Philippines.
For several years, the Sugar Artist lived in Indonesia. Her husband got a company assignment and the couple took the opportunity for a new environment that may help them have a child that they long for in their 11 years of marriage. While having an expatriate stint, she continued her art and flower designing workshops for expats and hoteliers. She also studied Indonesian arts & crafts including the authentic "Batik" and inclination to sugar sculpture started as her newest material for her art. Not only her art that she honed but her love for baking flourished. At first, The Sugar Artist was just making cakes for friends and family but as word got out about her unique creations, business picked up. The Sugar Artist is a joyous progression of an artist using variety of media and tools to express and communicate ideas and emotions. The Sugar Artist found sugar as the fabulously great material and discovered new techniques for her art in the heart of her home kitchen. She has an office at Eastwood City where she holds her meeting with clients by appointment. Loving MOTHERHOOD made what she is now. In 2008, her very precious son was born and continued her being The Sugar Artist. She would like to satisfy her day with a joyful motherhood and family life with a golden breath of art.
